NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee Titans defensive end Jevon Kearse broke a bone in his left foot in the opening minutes of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles and will be out 6-8 weeks. Kearse will have surgery Monday, coach Jeff Fisher said. "Obviously, we're going to have to go on,'' Fisher said. "We've lost a great player for six to eight weeks.'' The three-time Pro Bowler was chasing Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb on the Eagles' second play from scrimmage when Kearse hurdled teammate Henry Ford. He immediately grabbed his left foot as he landed. Kearse tried to walk to the sideline but stopped and had to be helped by trainers. Team officials initially described the injury as a sprained foot, but X-rays showed Kearse broke the fifth metatarsal. He later watched from the sideline wearing a boot on his left foot and holding crutches as the Titans beat the Eagles 27-24. "I'm really devastated that I can't be out there with my teammates, especially when we win,'' Kearse said. "But it's an opportunity for someone else to step up so that when I do come back, we'll be even better. I think I'm a fast healer, and I hope to be back for the open week.'' If that happens, he would miss just five games and be back by Oct. 20. Kearse had started his first 49 NFL games, and never missed a game to injury. He is only the third player in NFL history with double-digit sacks in each of his first three seasons with 36, which trails only Michael Strahan of the New York Giants (37.5) during that time. Carlos Hall, the Titans' seventh-round draft pick from Arkansas, filled in by tying Kearse's team rookie record with three sacks in a game. The Titans recorded six sacks, their best total since getting seven against Cleveland in November 1999. Hall said he will not try to be another Kearse. "He is the fastest lineman in football. All I could do is go and fill in for him, do what I can do and try to make plays,'' he said. Linebacker Keith Bulluck said losing Kearse was a shock. "I hope he keeps his head up,'' Bulluck said. "Carlos came in and showed what he can do, and that's what this team has to do. The rookie played well, but Jevon will be missed and we hope he gets back ASAP.'' |
