BEREA, Ohio -- Not only did Browns linebacker Dwayne Rudd cost his team a victory by throwing his helmet last Sunday, but he cost himself $5,000.
Rudd, whose 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct set up Kansas City's game-winning field goal with no time on the clock, was fined $5,000 Thursday by the NFL.
"I've learned from my mistakes and I definitely want to move on and get back to doing what I have to do,'' Rudd said Wednesday.
Browns kicker Phil Dawson and punter-holder Chris Gardocki also were fined $5,000 for taunting in the final seconds of the Chiefs' 40-39 victory.
Rudd thought he had sacked Kansas City quarterback Trent Green on the final play, so he pulled off his helmet and flung it in celebration.
Green, however, kept the play alive by flipping a lateral to Chiefs lineman John Tait, who ran it to the Browns 28. Rudd's penalty then moved the ball halfway to the goal line and Morten Andersen kicked a 30-yard field goal.
Gardocki was penalized 15 yards for taunting on Dawson's 41-yard field goal that gave the Browns a 39-37 lead with 29 seconds left. TV replays also showed Dawson pointing his finger at one of the Chiefs lying on the ground. |
