INDIANAPOLIS -- Peyton Manning walked into the Indianapolis Colts' locker room Monday with a heavily wrapped right knee and a limp, but he wasn't concerned about missing Sunday's game at Cleveland. Manning said he had an inflamed bursa sac. He was hurt when he slid after a 5-yard scramble during the Colts' final series in Sunday's 27-17 loss to the Titans. He continued to play but noticed the swelling afterward. "A lot of players have them,'' he said of the injury. "It's an aggravating thing.'' The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Colts (8-5), who are tied with Tennessee in the AFC South. The Titans beat the Colts both times this year. Manning said he was to meet with doctors later Monday as they debated whether to have the knee drained, and he hoped to return to practice Wednesday. Manning has been tough to get off the field since joining the Colts as a rookie in 1998. He opened last season with a slightly sprained right knee and broke his jaw against Miami when he was hit underneath the chin strap with a helmet. Yet he hasn't missed a start. Manning's streak of 77 consecutive starts is the second-longest active streak among quarterbacks, trailing only Brett Favre's 170 straight. And Manning's streak doesn't appear to be in jeopardy this week, either. "I don't think it will be a big factor,'' coach Tony Dungy said. "There's no ligament or structural damage.'' Manning has first-hand knowledge of the risks, though. During his senior season at Tennessee, he had an inflamed bursa sac drained and wound up spending several days in the hospital because of an infection. At that point, Tennessee was preparing for a bowl game, so Manning had weeks to heal. This time, he wouldn't have the luxury, so the Colts would take more precautions. "That was an awful experience,'' Manning said of his previous bursa sac injury. "The one thing I didn't do then was get on antibiotics right away. The doctors already said if I have it drained, they would start me on the antibiotics first.'' |
