Woodson had surgery to repair fractured fibula

Associated Press

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson had surgery Tuesday to repair his fractured right fibula and will miss the regular-season finale against Kansas City.

Woodson also could miss the first two weeks of the playoffs. Woodson had a surgery similar to that of teammate Tory James, who also broke his right fibula this year. James had surgery Dec. 12 and returned to practice Tuesday for the first time. He was originally slated to be sidelined from one-to-three weeks.

Coach Bill Callahan said the decision for Woodson to have surgery was made in the hopes of getting the four-time Pro Bowler back at some point in the playoffs.

Woodson has not played in a full game since first injuring his leg Dec. 2 against the New York Jets. He suited up for Oakland's game last week against Denver but was limited, sitting out the entire second half.

"This is a protective avenue to go with at this time,'' Callahan said.

Oakland (10-5) is tied with Tennessee for the best record in the AFC and can secure home-field advantage throughout the postseason by defeating Kansas City (8-7) on Saturday. The Raiders own the tiebreaker with the Titans after defeating them 52-25 earlier this season.

Getting the first-round bye that comes with home-field advantage would give Woodson an additional week of recovery time.
