Lions fire assistants Kirksey, Pires

Associated Press

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions fired wide receivers coach Larry Kirksey and linebackers coach Glenn Pires on Wednesday.

Kirksey joined the Lions in February 2001, after one season as wide receivers coach at Texas A&M. He held the same position with the San Francisco for six seasons, including three with Mornhinweg, who was the 49ers' offensive coordinator before becoming coach at Detroit.

Pires was the linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals before joining the Lions.

The Lions, 3-13 this season, are 5-27 in the last two seasons, the worst two-year stretch in franchise history.
