Jones wants to discuss future with running back first

ESPN.com news services

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Sunday that he has not as of yet made a decision on whether Emmitt Smith will be a viable member of the team next season.

"No one in our organization can say Emmitt isn't coming back or what role he would have to take or what he's going to be making because I don't think even I know that right now," Jones told the Star-Telegram. "I haven't decided how we are going to go forward."

Jones said no decision would be made until he and the career leading rusher in the NFL had a chance to sit down and talk things over. Jones said there was no urgency in setting up the meeting.

Money and the salary cap could be big issues. Smith is scheduled to make $7 million next season, and count $9.8 million against the salary cap. The Cowboys reportedly don't want to pay him more than $1 million.

Jones also said he expects Quincy Carter to be back as Chad Hutchinson's backup at quarterback.

"As we're sitting here right now, I'm expecting Quincy to be back," Jones said. "I don't know that a veteran quarterback can beat Quincy out."
