MINNEAPOLIS -- A missing wallet likely led to an argument and the gun shots that were fired at a vehicle driven by Minnesota Vikings running back Michael Bennett, authorities said.

Three shots were fired at Bennett's vehicle early May 12 after he and other Vikings players had left a St. Paul nightclub. His vehicle was hit once as he drove on a city street, then struck twice on Interstate 94 in Minneapolis.

Bennett was at Club Cancun with quarterback Daunte Culpepper and defensive lineman Willie Howard.

According to St. Paul police, six to eight women approached Bennett and talked to him the night of May 11. When they left, he noticed that his wallet was missing and walked across the club to confront them, Cmdr. Christopher Hoskin said.

Several men came to the women's defense, he said, and the disagreement spilled into the parking lot after the bar closed.

Club security workers reportedly saw the players and some patrons quarreling in the parking lot after the 1 a.m. closing time, said club manager Jared Lacina, whose cousin is Vikings guard Corbin Lacina.

Bennett told police he thought the shooting was related to the incident at the club.
