Former Denver player sentenced to prison

Associated Press

GOLDEN, Colo. -- Former Denver Broncos safety Mike Harden was sentenced to six years in prison Friday for defrauding about 15 people of $64,500.

Last year, Harden was sentenced to six years in a community corrections facility after pleading guilty to felony theft. That sentence was revoked in April because he violated restrictions on where he could maintain bank accounts and make purchases.

Investigators learned he had two bank accounts that were not approved, and was making purchases at a Victoria's Secret shop and other locations not approved under his sentence.

Prosecutors said Harden either borrowed or stole money from acquaintances, telling them he needed it for business deals. One former girlfriend said he stole blank checks from her checkbook, got her credit card number and took more than $40,000 from her.

Harden played nine seasons with the Broncos, intercepting 33 passes in 138 games, and later played for the Oakland Raiders. He was Denver's fifth-round draft choice in 1980 from Michigan.
