Man held in shooting death of Covington

Associated Press

CAMDEN, N.J. -- A man being held in a North Carolina jail has been charged with murder in the killing of former Buffalo Bills linebacker Damien Covington.

Covington was shot multiple times during a party on Nov. 29.

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi said three men with handguns forced their way into the party to try to steal marijuana or money.

Dion John Williams, 23, of Philadelphia, was one of those men, and he was the one who killed Covington, Sarubbi said. The other two men have not been identified.

Williams has been in the Cumberland County Jail in Fayetteville, N.C., since April 24 on drug charges. He is also wanted by police in Scranton, Pa., on drug charges.

Authorities served Williams with the warrant in the homicide on Monday _ less than a week after it was issued. It was not immediately clear when he might be returned to New Jersey.

Covington, a star linebacker in the early '90s at North Carolina State, spent the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Bills. His career was cut short in 1997 by a knee injury.
