EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings signed first-round draft pick Kevin Williams on Friday, the day players report to training camp. Terms were not disclosed. Minnesota also signed second-round pick E.J. Henderson -- the 40th selection in the 2003 NFL draft. Again, terms were not disclosed. The Vikings took Williams with the ninth overall pick. The defensive tackle was the highest-drafted defensive player in Viking history since the team picked Chris Doleman fourth overall in 1985. He is expected to play next to rising star Chris Hovan on the interior of the defensive line. Williams was also the third defensive lineman taken in the 2003 draft, following Kentucky's Dewayne Robertson (fourth by the New York Jets) and Georgia's Johnathan Sullivan (sixth by New Orleans). Williams comes to the Vikings from Oklahoma State, where he started 42 games and was a consensus All-Big 12 honoree as a senior in 2002. Williams is the third OSU Cowboy the Vikings have drafted in the first round, joining John Ward in 1970 and James White in 1976. Williams had 160 tackles (109 solo) and 18.5 sacks in his college career. He led OSU with seven sacks last season. In contrast to the Vikings' first-round pick last year, Williams came on board in time for training camp at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Last year, offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie held out until Nov. 1 after he was picked seventh overall. Henderson -- the third linebacker selected in the draft -- comes to Minnesota following back-to-back All-America honors as a junior and senior at Maryland. He received the Butkus Award and Bednarik Trophy as the top linebacker and defender. He was named the ACC player of the year and defensive player of the year as a junior. He was also the ACC defensive player of the year as a senior. Henderson ended his college career ranked second in tackles in Maryland history. He helped lead the Terrapins to a No. 10 ranking, an ACC title and a berth in the Orange Bowl. He finished with 473 tackles (329 solo), 17½ sacks for minus-107 yards and 62½ stops for losses of 207 yards while starting 36 of 46 games. | ||
