Jaguars' Hayward out for season with Achilles injury

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars defensive end Reggie Hayward ruptured his left Achilles tendon Sunday against Dallas and will have season-ending surgery.

Hayward pulled up lame early in the third quarter and had to be helped off the field. Hayward led the team with 8½ sacks and 59 quarterback pressures last season. He also had 47 tackles and two forced fumbles.

His injury marks the second consecutive year the Jags lost a defensive starter early in the season. Safety Donovin Darius tore a knee ligament in the second game of the season.

Hayward, who signed a five-year, $25 million contract in March 2005, is also the second starter lost for the season. Fullback Greg Jones tore a knee ligament in the preseason and was placed on injured reserve. Jones was scheduled to have season-ending surgery Tuesday.
