WASHNIGTON -- Joe Gibbs plans to return next season as coach of the Washington Redskins, he told reporters Monday.
"There is no equivocation. I plan on going forward and being the coach again," Gibbs said. "As long as I feel like this is where I'm supposed to be, I'm going to be here."
Gibbs has two years remaining on his five-year, $25-million contract.
The team had hoped bringing back Gibbs, who had three Super Bowl titles, would bring the franchise back to those glory days.
But after making the playoffs last season, the Redskins are 4-8 and out of the running for a repeat apperance. Gibbs, who is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is 20-24 in his return to the sidelines.
Defensive end Phillip Daniels said he's not surprised that Gibbs expects to return.
"Coach Gibbs is a fighter. In all his speeches, he always says, 'I'm not going nowhere,'" Daniels told The Baltimore Sun. "I've got to believe he's not going to [quit]. He's going to get this thing corrected."
