Stewart follows Phillips to Cowboys, will coach defense

IRVING, Texas -- Brian Stewart, the San Diego Chargers' secondary coach
last season, was hired Thursday as defensive coordinator for the
Dallas Cowboys.

Stewart, 42, spent the last three seasons with the Chargers,
where Wade Phillips, the new Cowboys coach, was the defensive
coordinator before replacing the retired Bill Parcells last month.

Before becoming assistant defensive backs coach for the Houston
Texans in 2002-03, Stewart held the same position at Syracuse for
Paul Pasqualoni, now the Cowboys' linebackers coach. Stewart also
coached at Northern Arizona (1995), Missouri (1996, 1999-2000) and
San Jose State (1997-98).
