| | Tuesday, January 30 Dilfer gets nod for Disney commercial ESPN.com news services
Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis won the Super Bowl MVP award Sunday, but he was not selected to say "I'm going to Disney World" as part of the Disney "What's Next" promotion. Ravens quarterback Trent Dilfer got the commercial instead.
A Disney spokesman said that over the past six years, the Super Bowl MVP only has been selected for the ad half the time. The company looks for an athlete who has a "cool, feel-good story," such as Dilfer's triumphant return to Tampa.
After Super Bowl XXX, Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith did the commercial instead of MVP Larry Brown, and after Super Bowl XXXII, Broncos quarterback John Elway did the commercial instead of MVP Terrell Davis.
The spokesman would not comment further on the selection process and would not say whether Lewis' legal history kept him from consideration for this year's commercial.
Lewis also was not among Ravens shown on the Wheaties cereal box celebrating the team's Super Bowl.
Ravens tight end Shannon Sharpe said upon seeing the box, "How can you have a Wheaties box without Ray Lewis on it?"
