The 23-year-old Roethlisberger is scheduled to appear on the "Late Show with David Letterman" on Monday night and plans to cut off the scruff with Gillette's new Fusion razor, according to Roethlisberger's agent, Ryan Tollner. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Roethlisberger reportedly started growing the beard before the team's "Monday Night Football" game against the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 28. Pittsburgh lost the game and the following one to the Cincinnati Bengals, but the beard was soon seen as a good luck superstition. With facial hair, Roethlisberger's team won eight in a row to close out the season, including Sunday night's 21-10 Super Bowl victory over the Seahawks.
Roethlisberger did not have a particularly memorable game, finishing 9-of-21 for 123 yards, with a 1-yard touchdown run.
This is the second time Gillette has paid for the shaving rights to an athlete's beard. In May 2004, the company paid then-Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon to shave his beard to promote their M3 Power razor.
The razor Roethlisberger will be shaving with has five blades. The razor was featured as part of a sponsorship deal at a party hosted by Roethlisberger's representative -- Tollner, Moon & Steinberg -- on Saturday afternoon.
There is no word as to whether hard-core Steelers fans will have a chance to own some of the beard clippings. Braves pitcher Tim Hudson once sold his goatee clippings for $75.
It has been a good week for Roethlisberger's marketing team. He recently signed a one-year, seven-figure exclusive autograph deal with a collectibles brand, Mounted Memories.
