He has been in the NFL for 14 years, played in 225 games and caught 784 passes and receiver Irving Fryar has finally decided to hang up his cleats. Maybe. During a chat session live from Miami and the Super Bowl, Fryar told users he has not officially retired, but he is leaning in that direction. He also touched on what the Falcons need to do to win the big game and why you won't catch him in a Dolphins uniform anytime soon. An edited transcript from his Jan. 26 chat follows.
Hal: Now that you're retired, how come you don't say what you really feel about the Eagles organization and Bob Lurie? Irving Fryar: I don't know what it is that people would like me to say. I had a good time in Philadelphia and I really do believe that they are looking to try to do things better. We did not have a successful year and that's the best thing I can say about that. I just think that any thing negative from their part or mine doesn't do any of us any good. Stoney: Considering the year you had in '97, does it make it harder to leave after a less than stellar '98? Also, what do you think about Koy Detmer, is he starter material or is he more of a backup, comparable to his brother? Irving Fryar: It's hard to leave this year after not having caught the number of balls, scored the number of TDs or piled up the yards like I had the year before and the year before that. But my decision wasn't based on stats. It was based on the fact that I have a family and it felt like the right time to do this. Koy is going to be a great quarterback. Maybe not as a starter, but Koy will be a great backup for a lot of teams like his brother is out in San Francisco. I think Koy will play a lot of years in the NFL. Justin: What was your greatest memory from being in the NFL? Irving Fryar: I would have to say a couple of years ago when I caught four TDs against my ex-teammates -- the Miami Dolphins.
Larry: When do you plan on retiring? Irving Fryar: As of now, I'm retired. I haven't officially signed my papers, so I'm not 100 percent retired, but I'm retired right now. But, anything is possible... John Smith: Would you ever consider playing for the Dolphins again, given their need for a game breaker receiver? I know the situation was not the best when you left here (or forced to) but you and Dan did make a nice duo. Irving Fryar: No, I wouldn't come back to the Dolphins. Our bridges weren't burned but they didn't show any interest when I became a free agent my last year there so I wouldn't really consider going back there. Big boi: Can the Falcons win by not shutting down Terrell Davis? Irving Fryar: If they don't shut him down or harness him in some type of capacity, they will not win. Eagles Fan 1: What is your impression of Andy Reid and the Eagle's future? Irving Fryar: It's hard to say -- I don't know him very well, in fact I've never met him. Talking to people that know him, however, they say he has a good, firm grip on what he believes in and he's a strong disciplinarian with great communication skills. Those are the tools you need to be a good coach so I wish him luck. Jeremy Winn: Besides Dan Marino, who is the best quarterback that you have ever played for? Do you wish you could change any part of your career? Irving Fryar: Steve Grogan was the best besides Marino. He was a great guy. Tough, fun and he had a good knowledge of the game. I enjoyed my time with him. At this point, there wouldn't be anything that I would change unless they don't get me into the Hall of Fame. Then, we'll have to change the stats. Drew Hinkel: You are an inspiration for everyone, athletes and non-athletes alike. What made you want to write, "Sunday is My Day?" Irving Fryar: Just to let people know that you can be down and still get back up. I've had some points in my life when things weren't looking real good and I was wandering around with no direction. I just wanted to let people know that those things can happen, but if you hold on to your belief that there is hope in your situation, you can come out and make something positive of the situation. Robert: How do you like your Harley? Irving Fryar: It's very nice. It's a fatboy with a stalker kit on it. It's a '99 and it didn't come out of my paycheck. Big Cowboy: Which is you favorite team to win the Super Bowl? Irving Fryar: I like the Falcons. Thanks for all the questions. Maybe we'll do this again tomorrow night. Take care.
