Falcons have the right defense
Not many teams were able to shut down Denver running back Terrell Davis this season, but one team did a pretty good job. That team was the San Diego Chargers, and ESPN NFL analyst Mike Golic points out that the Atlanta Falcons have a very similar defense to the Chargers.

In a chat session live from Miami, Golic told ESPN.com users just how the San Diego and Atlanta defenses compare and he likes the Falcon's chances against Davis. He also touched on the quarterback matchup and he settled the argument about which dance is better -- the Ickey Shuffle or the Dirty Bird.

An edited transcript from Golic's Jan. 28 chat follows.

Golic took time away from the radio to chat with users on Thursday.

BearsFanIL: What does Mike McCaskey see in Dick Jaroun to hire him as head coach? To me he is just another Wannie wannabe.

Mike Golic: I could tell in all of Mike's comments leading up to hiring a head coach that he was looking for a defensive coach. So that narrowed the choices down. And he was set on Dave until they blew that one. At that time, Dick was really the only other defensive coordinator out there.

Justin (raiders fan): Should Lawrence Taylor be inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Mike Golic: If the Hall of Fame criteria were morally based, LT and a whole lot of other players wouldn't be in the Hall of Fame. I wouldn't want to break bread with the man and I don't like some of the things he's done, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone better at his position. So, yes -- I would put him in the Hall of Fame.

Dustin: Would you agree that Denver's secondary is suspect and aging? I don't think they will be able to stop Terance Mathis and Tony Martin. Chris Chandler is going to pick apart their secondary.

Mike Golic: Don't count their secondary out just yet. But, I do see areas that Chandler can take advantage of. I think a big weapon could be tight end O.J. Santiago. He averaged about 16 yards per reception during the season, which means he runs middle routes. If they can be successful with that and force the safeties to help on the tight end, that could really help Mathis and Martin get open on the outside.

Matt: Which team do you think is going to win?

Mike Golic: I'm picking Atlanta, 28-24. They have the attacking style defense with a penetrating defensive line -- the same type San Diego had, and they stopped Terrell Davis for under 100 yards in both of their games.

Bruno: Do you think the Falcon's defensive stunts will be effective against the Bronco offensive line? Will the Falcons be able to put pressure on John Elway?

Mike Golic: That is the key to the game -- the Falcons defensive line versus Denver's offensive line. The gap shooting, penetrating D-line of Atlanta does a great job of forcing running backs into quicker decisions.

David GAughan: How do think the rain will play a factor in this game?

Mike Golic: I don't think rain gives either team an advantage. Both running backs are more straight ahead runners than dancers.

Burg: Do you think that if Atlanta can't run the ball, it will be a long day for them, or can their passing game keep them in it?

GOLIC'S FILE
Mike Golic serves as NFL analyst for ESPN and ESPN2, and is co-host of ESPN Radio's ESPN Morning Show, which premiered on the network's flagship station ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago on October 12, 1998.

Golic joined ESPN in 1995 as an NFL reporter/analyst for Sunday NFL Countdown, and in 1998 became an original analyst for NFL 2Night, the five-night per week League news and information program on ESPN2.

Golic is a nine-year NFL veteran, playing defensive tackle for the Houston Oilers, Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins.

Golic is a 1985 graduate of Notre Dame where he was captain and linebacker his senior season. His brothers Bob and Greg also played for the Fighting Irish.

Golic, born Dec. 12, 1962, hosts the morning drivetime radio show on KGME in Phoenix. Additionally, he does color commentary for Jacksonville Jaguars' pre-season telecasts.

Mike Golic: I think the Minnesota game answered that question. Jamal Anderson was held well under 100 and Chris Chandler threw for over 340 yards. They have enough weapons to overcome their running game being stopped.

SkinsFan: In a shootout, who wins -- Elway or Chandler?

Mike Golic: That's a great question. I guess because Elway has done it before so many times, I'd have to give him the edge. But that one could easily go either way.

SkinsFan: What can Art Shell do to minimize the effectiveness of the Broncos' linebackers?

Mike Golic: Play-action passing is one of the best ways to get linebackers caught out of position. With Anderson carrying the ball so many times, their play-action is probably the best in the league. As far as blocking, the Denver linebackers are small and athletic so you try to use your size on them to push them.

SkinsFan: Too much is being made of the fact the Broncos have been here before and the Falcons haven't. Does this take pressure off the Falcons to just play their game on Sunday?

Mike Golic: That situation gave the media something to write about for a week, but plain and simple: once the ball is kicked off Sunday, all is forgotten.

Packers Fan: Have you evened the score yet with Kornheiser over the "gamey" chair remark?

Mike Golic: Yes. I know Tony has to do a radio show, so I didn't hurt his face, but next time you see him, he will have a noticeable limp.

Marty: What was it like working with Zack Morris on Saved by the Bell?

Mike Golic: That was my brother, Bob.

Curious: Which do you prefer -- the Ickey Shuffle or the Dirty Bird?

Mike Golic: I would have to say the Dirty Bird because at least they show some variety. The Ickey Shuffle was just one dance. It was the same dance each time. These guys doing the Dirty Bird have all kinds of wacky things going on. They win in my book because of their variety.

SkinsFan: Does Jessie Tuggle have the speed to cover Shannon Sharpe or will Rich Brooks mix up the coverage on the Pro Bowl TE?

Mike Golic: Normally a middle linebacker doesn't cover a tight end and Jessie plays in the middle so he won't be covering him. You've got Henri Crockett or Cornelius Bennett. When Shannon is on the line, you may see an outside linebacker cover him, but I would think they would hand him off to a safety.

Definitely when Shannon splits out a way from the line, they'll have to have Bennett walk out on him to try to jam him on the line. But he'll let him go to get picked up by a safety. You will rarely see a linebacker try to cover him one on one.

Packman: Do you think the Broncos will stick to consistently blitzing, especially on third down, if they get burned early?

Mike Golic: The one thing you don't want to do is consistently do anything or the offense will pick up on that and they will catch you in your little game. The Denver defense has been doing a great job stopping the run in their normal defense. I think they will play their normal defense and they can stop them with that.

Walter Denney: No one ever mentions the music of the Super Bowl. What do you think about KISS as the pregame entertainment?

Mike Golic: I like KISS, but I don't understand why Cher is doing the national anthem to be honest. I love KISS. That was a big group when I was growing up and I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for the questions. I have to go now.
