Lawrence Taylor may not be of the best character, but he was a great linebacker and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, says former New York Giants general manager George Young.
ESPN.com caught up with Young as the announcement of LT's induction was made. In a chat with users, Young talked about his relationship with Taylor and why he thinks he belongs in the Hall.
An edited transcript follows:

| | Young was on hand in Miami to hear about LT's induction. |
JR: What do you think of Lawrence Taylor's induction into the Hall of Fame?
George Young: I'm very happy for him. I hope it helps him and I hope he understands the
responsibilities that come with it. There aren't very many people in the Hall of Fame.
Yup Yup: Do think LT should have been elected to the Hall of Fame?
George Young:
The recognition was going to come and we all knew that. He got this with his play on
the field because he excelled. He
deserved it.
Briguy: Do you think that Lawrence will ever straighten up?
George Young:
The Giants organization will always be involved in trying to help him. Whenever you
deal with people, however, you have to help people help themselves. I know
Wellington Mara (Giants President and CEO) has tried to remain close to the scene on that. I think even Frank Gifford
has tried to help.
Justin: Do you think LT is happy about being inducted or could he care less?
George Young:
I don't know, but if his election were delayed, the snub would have spent a whole year festering
in him. So it's in his best interest that a decision was made now. It sets him apart from some other athletes and it should be a boost to his self esteem, maybe. That's always good when you are having tough times.
Homer: Do you think LT is good enough to be in the Hall of Fame?
George Young:
He deserved it, he was a great player. Intensity is what set him apart from the
others on the defensive side. I don't know if he was the greatest of all time and all
that. All I know is that if you're one of the greatest in the time you played, that's
what's important.
Justin: Now with LT being elected into the Hall of Fame, will the criteria of the vote be
changed so voters can vote on a player based on the players life on and off the
field?
George Young:
The problem I have with the Hall of Fame is that there are some wonderful players
that don't get in.
Brian: Do you think LT was the best linebacker ever to play the game?
George Young:
I don't know about that stuff, but he did help redefine his position.
One way was that when quarterbacks broke from the huddle, the first thing they
looked for was where No. 56 was. The anxiety that a player creates before the
snap of the ball shows the greatness of the player because you know that because
he's there, you have to do something about it. That's when greatness shows. It
affects your game plan and everything else. The other team gives you the respect by
how you deal with it.
Darlene Taylor: On L.T. Hall of Fame induction: Great football player? Yes. Great enough for the Hall of Fame? Yes. Great character of a man? NO!
Being humble could include at least apologizing to the people and fans you may have
hurt along your way.
George Young:
There are a lot of pluses about Lawrence. Everybody has seen him knock the ball
out of people's hands and knock people over. I always noted that he was a very
clean player. He played rough and tough the way he should with great intensity.
One of the things that was most significant was the Joe Theismann play. Even with the
intensity that he played with, he did recognize compassion for the guys he played
against. I think that his behavior at that time showed that. That was very upsetting to
him. I notice those things -- things like when a friend needed help, he helped.
Ziggy: What was your relationship with Lawrence like? Do you still keep in touch with him?
George Young:
I haven't talked to him this week. I actually still work in the office. I don't know
where he is. I haven't seen him for a while. He's on a movie set or something.
I was in a lot of fights with him and whatever agent he had at the time, but he was always
respectful. He was never disrespectful regardless of how heated the discussions got.
Thanks for the questions. Take care.
