HONOLULU -- Fans attending the Pro Bowl on Saturday at Aloha Stadium can expect increased attention to security, but not as extreme as what was in place at the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
"We will ratchet that up a little bit," Reuben Bradford, the NFL's senior director of security, said last week.
Security measures will include some vehicle inspections as well as searches of all purses, fanny packs, diaper bags, seat cushions and camera equipment brought to the game, Bradford said.
Banned items include coolers, back packs, duffel bags, weapons, explosives or fireworks, artificial noisemakers, laser pointers, baby seats, beach balls, folding chairs, strollers and umbrellas. The same type of security measures were implemented for University of Hawaii football games at Aloha Stadium after the terrorist attacks.
"The sole purpose is to ensure that we have a safe environment for fans and players and everyone associated with the game," he said.
Security measures at all NFL venues have been stepped up since Sept. 11.
Sunday's Super Bowl at the Superdome in New Orleans was designated a National Security Special Event, with the Secret Service and FBI in charge of the security detail.
Although the Pro Bowl will not enjoy the same level of security, Bradford thanked state and city officials for putting their resources, including the National Guard, at the NFL's disposal.
"Everyone here in Honolulu has been extremely courteous and cooperative with regards to the security effort," Bradford said. "The entire plan is developed by the NFL in conjunction with other entities such as Honolulu police and Aloha Stadium."
One person not worried about security is Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter.
"That's the least of my worries," said Trotter, who will be playing in his second Pro Bowl. "We have a great security staff with the NFL. They do a great job of keeping the players and the fans safe."
