Unexcused absences cost Owens, Rice $4,000

HONOLULU -- Terrell Owens and Simeon Rice were fined $4,000 each for missing the NFC's Pro Bowl practice and a post-practice meeting Friday.

Neither player let the NFL or the NFC's coaching staff know where they were or accounted for their absences at the practice, held at 9 a.m. at Aloha Stadium.

The league said no further action will be taken, and both players will participate in the Pro Bowl on Sunday.

Rice wasn't available for comment, but Owens spent the early evening Friday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, a large resort near Waikiki Beach. The resort houses the league personnel in town to run the Pro Bowl, as well as thousands of tourists and other NFL players in town, but not participating in the Pro Bowl.

Owens declined comment before watching a fireworks show over the beach. This is the third consecutive trip to the Pro Bowl for the San Francisco 49ers' flamboyant All-Pro receiver.

Rice, a defensive end for the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is playing in his second Pro Bowl. He arrived in Hawaii on Wednesday night -- two days later than most players, thanks to Tampa Bay's celebratory party on Tuesday.

Players have been known to miss Pro Bowl practices before -- and the practices are non-contact affairs usually lasting less than an hour. Both teams will have a short walk-through practice on Saturday morning.
