Which team would be in the most trouble if it started out 0-2?
 Mark Malone |
Dallas Cowboys
People were talking about the Cowboys as a possible wild-card team. But look at their schedule; it's ridiculous. After losing to expansion Houston, the Cowboys have Tennessee, Philadelphia, St. Louis and the NY Giants over the next four weeks. You could argue that the Cowboys could start out 0-5. That would probably warrant a quarterback change -- and perhaps a head-coaching change.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
By changing divisions, from the old NFC Central to the NFC South, it got easier for them. But the team that should be their biggest competition, the Saints, beat them in Week 1. And if the Bucs go 0-2, there could be a lot of nonsense talk. They are a team that has had some in-house fighting in the past. The Bucs gave up draft picks and money for Jon Gruden, whom I love. But they would have the worst start if any NFL team if they started 0-2 and had to go into a chase mode right away.

St. Louis Rams
They are in the same division as the 49ers. And if the Rams go 0-2, panic could possibly set in because St. Louis has such high expectations based on how dominant the Rams have been the last three years. An 0-2 hole would test their character and cause problems, maybe even dissension.

New York Giants
They play the Rams in St. Louis this week. While the Giants can't be excited about losing their opener, they played fairly well against the 49ers. The Giants need to win now because Philadelphia is the class of the NFC East. If the Giants fall to 0-2 and Philadelphia beats Washington on Monday night, the Eagles will start to separate themselves over the next month. The Giants can't lose that ground. They could push Philadelphia, but they won't be able to catch them if they fall a few games behind.

Cleveland Browns
A number of people picked the Browns as the breakthrough team this season. Even though Pittsburgh is also 0-1, I still believe the Steelers will win the AFC North. It will be hard for Cleveland to be a wild-card team because of the AFC East, the most dominant division in the NFL. I could imagine two wild-card teams coming from the East or even the West. The Browns need to think about winning their division maybe more than any other team in the AFC because it would be nearly imposible for them to be a wild card with the strength in both the West and the East. In addition, the ignominious way they lost to the Chiefs could set a tone for the entire season.

Dallas Cowboys
Looking at their schedule, they could start out 0-4. They have a big question mark at quarterback with Quincy Carter. They are so unsettled it's ridiculous. Their leading tackler, Dat Nguyen, is out for 6-8 weeks with a broken wrist. They have problems that go beyond falling to 0-2.
