User feedback: All-time best free agent signings

ESPN.com

Users submitted their greatest free agents of all time. Below are the best responses. For the top five choices of ESPN.com's John Clayton, click here.

Rich Gannon
Rich Gannon has reached the Pro Bowl in both of his seasons with the Raiders.
Your lists

1. Keenan McCardell, Jaguars. While it was speculated that he was on the rise, no one knew how good he would be.
2. Joe Horn, Saints. No major college football, no big pro numbers. Yet Randy Mueller had the balls to give him a big contract. Next thing, he is in the Pro Bowl.
3. Reggie White, Packers. The most prolific free agent of all time. An obvious choice.
4. Shannon Sharpe, Ravens. Made the Ravens a contender.
5. Michael McCrary, Ravens. Was on the rise in Seattle when the Ravens swept him up. He has been a solid performer ever since.
Chad Collura
Mandeville, La.

My criteria for the all-time best free-agent signings are winning, productive play, and Super Bowls.
1. Reggie White, Packers. He turned it around up there.
2. Deion Sanders, 49ers, Dallas. Instrumental in numerous wins and Super Bowls.
3. Ed McCaffrey, Broncos. Critical to the Broncos' success.
4. Howard Griffith, Broncos. Ask Terrell, or Olandis, or whoever they have, what they think about Howard.
5. Sean Jones, Packers. Freed up Reggie and Leroy Butler.
Jim Martin
Bellevue, Neb.

Other free-agent finds

Sam Adams
Adams
Sam Adams, DT, Ravens (2000). He solidified the Ravens' front four and also allowed the Ravens to use their first-round picks to draft Travis Taylor and Jamal Lewis. Ozzie Newsome doesn't get enough credit.
Eddie Meushaw
Baltimore, Md.

Rich Gannon, QB, Raiders (1999). When Gannon was acquired, the Raiders were a laughing stock. Now they are defending AFC West champions. Nobody I know or read, including myself (a fan of the team since I was eight), saw this coming through the Rich Gannon signing. Can you do better in free agency than the Raiders did with Rich Gannon?
Scott Alan Buss
Mukilteo, Wash.

Charles Haley, DE, Cowboys (1992). Haley was the man among boys in that tough Cowboys defense of the early 90s. He was one of the all-time greats to ever play. Just count those rings. He earned every one of them.
Dave Parent
Warrensburg, Mo.

Wilber Marshall, LB, Redskins (1988). When free agency was revamped a decade ago, one of the biggest names to move to a new team was Wilber Marshall, one of the most versatile and athletic linebackers to play the game. The Redskins surrendered two first-round picks to acquire him from the Bears. The result was a 'Skins Super Bowl victory three years later.
Manuel Montoya
Irvine, Calif.

Curtis Martin, RB, Jets (1998). Even though he was a restricted free agent and the Jets gave up a first- and third-round draft choice for him, it was well worth it. He knew the offense coming from New England and he was in his prime.
Derek Silva
Spotswood, N.J.

Hardy Nickerson
Nickerson
Hardy Nickerson, LB, Buccaneers (1993). His signing was the key to solidifying a team that had been horrible. He led them through an ownership change, a coaching change, an image change and ultimately to multiple playoff appearances and an NFC championship game (he played superbly by the way).
Don Jackson
Nashville, Tenn.

Ken Norton, LB, 49ers (1994). His acquisition served three critical purposes for a San Francisco team which badly needed to improve its defense to get over the NFC championship game hump. Norton became the soul of the Niners' defense which won the Super Bowl that year. Two, his departure from two-time defending Super Bowl champ Dallas left a huge void at middle linebacker that has never really been filled. Three, he provided leadership and determination for six years.
Dave Nazzaro
San Mateo, Calif.

Jay Novacek, TE, Cowboys (1990). Although he fell under the old plan B free agency system, he has to be considered one of the best. He was a mainstay in the Cowboys' attack. His forced retirement due to a bad back greatly hindered Dallas' offense and had a lot to due with their decline after their last Super Bowl win.
Rob Cady
Phoenix, Ariz.

Bryce Paup, LB, Bills (1995). He came in and had 17.5 sacks in his first year in Buffalo to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and revitalized Bruce Smith and the entire defense.
Adam Pitterman
Cleveland, Miss.

Bill Romanowski, LB, Broncos (1996). Romo's unstoppable, unbreakable, and unlikable style greatly helped both teams. Winning back-to-back Super Bowls with Denver pushed his total rings to four. You measure the all-time best free agent by how much the signing helped his new team win. Who wins more than Romo?
Greg Francis
Arvada, Colo.

Kurt Warner, QB, Rams (1997). There can be ONLY one ... KURT WARNER!
Manny Martinez
Mesa, Ariz.
