Baxter Bits: Ravens at Jaguars

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Ravens head south to Jacksonville looking to end their losing ways in this lopsided AFC Central rivalry.

Jacksonville owns a perfect 6-0 mark in this series and a year ago swept this series in very convincing fashion. In Week 3 at ALLTEL Stadium, Jaguars QB Mark Brunell threw for 376 yards and a pair of third-quarter touchdown passes and rookie RB Fred Taylor accounted for 213 yards from scrimmage and a score (23-128-1 TD rushing, 9-85 receiving) as Tom Coughlin's club rolled up 519 total yards in a 24-10 triumph.

Six weeks later at Baltimore (Week 9), Brunell threw for 237 yards and two more touchdowns (1 INT) and the Jaguars' defense and special teams scored touchdowns as well as Coughlin's team rolled up a 42-7 second-quarter advantage enroute to a 45-19 triumph.

The Ravens are 0-3 lifetime at ALLTEL Stadium dating back to 1996.

Numbers: The Ravens have scored 222 points in 10 wins, 183 points in 15 losses dating back to '98. They have not recovered an opponent's fumble in four straight games. The Ravens have totaled three or more sacks in 6-of-8 games in '99.

The Jaguars have totaled 35 sacks in eight games in '99, this after totaling just 30 sacks in 16 games in '98. They have totaled four or more sacks in five straight games and 7-of-8 contests in '99. The Jags have limited the opposition to 10 or fewer points in five straight games and 6-of-8 contests in '99. Jacksonville has allowed 56 points in seven wins, 20 points in one loss in '99. Including playoffs, the Jaguars have forced 48 turnovers in 19 wins, eight turnovers in seven losses dating back to '98. The Jaguars have totaled 33 or more rushing attempts in each of their eight games in '99. Including playoffs, they have seen a player gain 100 or more yards rushing in 12 of their last 26 games dating back to 1998, more than doubling the number of 100-yard rushing performances (5) that the Jaguars managed in the regular and postseason combined (5) during their first three years in the NFL (1995-97). The Jaguars have not committed a turnover in three straight games. They have committed three turnovers in seven wins, four turnovers in one loss in '99.

Things to look for: Brian Billick's offense may have gotten well for a week against the expansion Browns, but Jacksonville's defense is an entirely different story as Dom Capers' unit continues to pile up the sacks and takeaways. Meanwhile, Jaguars' RB Fred Taylor has recaptured his standout form of a year ago, bad news for a Ravens' defensive unit that continues to be inconsistent against the run.

Etc.: The Jaguars are 7-1 for the first time in the team's 5-year history (1995-99).

Since entering the NFL in 1996, the Ravens are 8-20 vs. AFC Central rivals.

The Jaguars have won five straight games. Including playoffs, the Jaguars are 45-33 in their 78-game history (1995-99), including 24-12 vs. AFC Central rivals. Including playoffs, they are 23-3 in their last 26 home games dating back to 1996
