Baxter Bits: Broncos at Seahawks

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Broncos make their way to Seattle looking to continue their recent dominance in this always-entertaining divisional rivalry.

Denver owns a 28-16 overall edge in the series standings (including an AFC First Round playoff loss in 83) and has been very successful as of late, prevailing in six straight and 11 of the last 13 battles dating back to the teams second meeting in 1992.

Last year, the Broncos swept this series for the third consecutive season. In Week 6 at the Kingdome, Broncos RB Terrell Davis rushed for 208 yards and a score and since-departed QB John Elway threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns (2 INTs) as Denver jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, then held on for a 21-16 triumph.

Two months later at Mile High Stadium (Week 17), Davis rushed for 178 yards (giving him 2,008 yards for the season) and caught a touchdown pass from Elway (who finished the game with 338 yards and 4 scores) as Denver managed a 28-21 triumph.

Including playoffs, the Broncos are just 11-12 lifetime on the road in this series dating back to 1977, but have prevailed in three straight and five of their last six visits to the Seattle area dating back to 1993 (including a 16-9 triumph at the University of Washingtons Husky Stadium in 1994--the Seahawks temporary home for 3 games that year while repairs were taking place at the Kingdome).

Numbers: Including playoffs (1997-99), the Broncos are 35-3 when they total more rushing attempts than their opponent, 1-9 when Denver's opponent totals more rushing attempts. Including playoffs, they have scored 30 or more points in 38-of-81 games under head coach Mike Shanahan (1995-99). They have forced nine turnovers in three wins, five turnovers in six losses in '99. The Broncos have allowed three or more sacks in three straight games.

Seahawks WR Joey Galloway has totaled 110 receptions for 1,698 yards and 20 touchdowns, plus returned 2 punts for scores, in his last 25 games dating back to '97. In their last 24 games dating back to 1998, Seahawks' defense/special teams have scored 17 touchdowns (10 interception returns, 2 fumble returns, 3 punt returns, 1 kickoff return, 1 blocked field goal return). They have forced two or more turnovers in four straight games. The Seahawks have totaled two or more interceptions in four straight games. QB Jon Kitna has thrown two or more touchdown passes in three straight games.

Things to look for: The last time we saw Mike Holmgren and Mike Shanahan square off, a Super Bowl title was on the line. This time around, the stakes may not be quite as high, especially for the disappointing Broncos, who have proven they can still be a handful for the teams within their division. Look for Shanahan to turn to rookie RB Olandis Gary as he tries to exploit the 'Hawks' injury-riddled defensive front.

Etc.: The Seahawks are 6-2 for the first time since 1984, when they finished a team-record 12-4 and qualified for the playoffs under since-departed head coach Chuck Knox. The Broncos are 4-8 in their last 12 regular-season contests dating back to '98. After going 3-5 vs. AFC West foes during his first season with Denver in 1995, Broncos' head coach Mike Shanahan is 23-5 vs. divisional competition (including 1-0 in playoffs) since 1996. The Seahawks are 17-41 vs. divisional competition since 1992 (1-1 in '99). They have won three straight games, and three straight home games. RB Ricky Watters (8,549) needs 48 yards to tie Jim Taylor (8,597) for 14th place on the NFL's all-time rushing list
