The Colts make their second appearance at the Meadowlands this year and face the Giants (off last week) as these teams collide in the regular season for the first time since 1993. While the Colts own a 7-5 edge in the overall standings (the difference being a pair of victories in the 1958 and '59 NFL Championship Games), the Giants have prevailed in the last two meetings, including a 20-6 victory at East Rutherford in '93 in the most recent clash between the clubs. Including postseason, the Colts own a 5-3 road record in this setting dating back to 1955, including a 1-1 mark in their two previous appearances at the Meadowlands (to play the Giants) dating back to 1979.
Numbers: After throwing just three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his first four games, Colts QB Peyton Manning has thrown 38 TD passes and 26 interceptions in his last 20 contests dating back to '98, throwing 2 or more touchdown passes in 12 of his last 19 games. However, Manning has thrown two or more interceptions in 8 of his last 17 contests. Manning has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 21 straight games dating back to '98. After allowing an AFC-high 62 sacks in 16 games in 1997, the Colts have allowed just 29 sacks in their last 24 games dating back to '98. After allowing 11 sacks in their first four games in 1998, they have allowed just 18 sacks in their last 20 contests, giving up zero sacks in 11 of those 20 contests. The Colts have allowed 97 points in nine wins, 65 points in two losses in '99. They have not intercepted a pass in three straight games. RB Edgerrin James has scored at least one touchdown in three straight games. The Giants have limited the opposition to 17 or fewer points in six straight games. They have allowed three or more sacks in four straight games. The Giants have scored 320 points and committed just 14 turnovers in 13 wins, while scoring just 115 points and committing 23 turnovers in 11 losses dating back to '98. They have forced 35 turnovers and totaled 50 sacks in 13 wins, while totaling just five takeaways and 24 sacks in 11 losses dating back to '98. Things to look for: Jim Mora's club is on a major roll and may not slow down for awhile as the Colts' three-headed monster of QB Peyton Manning, RB Edgerrin James and WR Marvin Harrison continues to confound opposing defenses. Still, the Giants' sturdy defense won't just roll over, although New York's inconsistent offense will have to play better if Jim Fassel's team is to pull out a victory. Etc.: The Colts are 6-2 for the first time since 1977, when they opened 9-1 and finished 10-4 and won the AFC East under since-departed head coach Ted Marchibroda (his first stint with the team). They are 6-2 in 1999, this after finishing a combined 6-26 in 1997-98. Indy has won four straight games. The Colts are 12-6 lifetime (11-5 vs. Jets, 1-1 vs. Giants) at the Meadowlands. However, they are just 9-20 vs. NFC teams dating back to 1991 (1-0 in '99). The Giants have won three straight games. They have also won three straight home games. Including playoffs, the Giants are 15-5-1 vs. NFC East opponents and just 8-12 (0-1 in playoffs) vs. the rest of the NFL under head coach Jim Fassel (1997-99). They are just 6-11 vs. AFC teams dating back to 1995 (0-1 in '99) |
