The Chiefs head south to Tampa Bay as these clubs square off for the second time this year (Buccaneers managed a 17-7 victory this summer at Arrowhead Stadium) and the first time in the regular season since 1993. Kansas City owns a 5-2 edge in the series standings and has prevailed in the last four meetings, including a 27-3 triumph at Tampa in 1993 in the most recent regular-season battle between the teams. The Chiefs own a 2-1 lifetime road mark in this interconference setting.
Numbers: In his last four games vs. Tampa Bay, Chiefs WR Andre Rison has caught 31 passes for 390 yards and seven touchdowns. Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs quarterbacks have thrown 96 touchdown passes compared to just 30 interceptions in 69 victories, while throwing just 35 TD passes and 60 interceptions in 41 defeats. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have totaled 71 takeaways in 25 wins, 21 takeaways in 16 losses dating back to '97. The Chiefs have forced two or more turnovers in nine straight games dating back to '98. The Buccaneers have been outscored a combined 53-24 in the first quarter in eight games in '99. They have returned 1,409 kickoffs in their 24-year history (1976-99) and have never scored a touchdown on a kickoff return. Things to look for: A loss to the red-hot Colts is nothing to be ashamed of as Gunther Cunningham's club is quietly making strides. And their physical defense will certainly cause Buccaneers QB Trent Dilfer some angst, although the former Pro Bowl passer comes off his best effort in recent seasons. Still, given the caliber of both defenses, both Dilfer and Chiefs' QB Elvis Grbac will have their hands full. Etc.: Since 1989, the Chiefs are 30-10 vs. NFC teams (1-1 in '99). Since 1996 (including playoffs), the Buccaneers are 29-29 under head coach Tony Dungy, including just 11-19 vs. NFC Central rivals and 18-10 vs. the rest of the NFL. Since '97 (including playoffs), they are 9-13 vs. NFC Central rivals and 14-6 vs. the rest of the NFL. The Buccaneers are 6-21 lifetime vs. current AFC West teams. They are just 24-46 lifetime in interconference games (1-0 in '99). |
