The Redskins head to Veterans Stadium as this longtime NFC East rivalry is renewed once again. While the Redskins own a 70-53-5 overall edge (including playoffs) in this rivalry, the Eagles have been the dominant team in this series as of late, prevailing in 11 of the last 15 meetings dating back to the teams' second meeting in 1991. Last season, these longtime combatants split their two-game set for the third straight year. In Week 6 at Veterans Stadium, since-departed Eagles QB Rodney Peete (now with Washington) threw for 121 yards and a touchdown (1 INT), plus ran 19 yards for a score as Philadelphia squeaked out a 17-12 victory. Five weeks later at Redskins Stadium (Week 11), Redskins RB Skip Hicks ran for 94 yards and three touchdowns and the Washington defense totaled five sacks and three interceptions as Norv Turner's team rolled to an easy 28-3 victory. The Redskins have dropped two straight and are just 1-7 in their last 8 visits to Philadelphia dating back to 1991. Worth noting is that 13 of the last 15 games in this series -- 11 won by the Eagles -- have been decided by 7seven or fewer points.
Numbers: Since 1993, the Redskins have given up 130 or more yards rushing in 52-of-104 games, 200 or more yards on the ground in 12 of those contests, while limiting the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in just 22 of those 104 games. They have allowed 120 or more yards rushing in 16 of their last 24 contests dating back to '98. In his last 10 starts (2 with Minnesota in 1998, 8 with Washington in 1999), Redskins QB Brad Johnson has completed 191-of-315 passes (60.6 percent) for 2,490 yards, 20 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions, with his team scoring a combined 328 points (31, 38, 35, 50, 27, 38, 24, 20, 48 and 17 points) in those contests. RB Stephen Davis has rushed for 729 yards and 12 touchdowns in eight games in 1999, running for 100-plus yards in three of those contests. In his three previous seasons (1996-98), Davis rushed for 815 yards and five touchdowns in 42 games and had failed to gain 100 or more yards rushing in any of those contests. In his last 19 games dating back to '98, Redskins WR Michael Westbrook has caught 80 passes for 1,398 yards and 11 touchdowns, totaling 100 or more yards receiving in 6 of those games. In his three previous seasons (1995-97), Westbrook caught 102 passes for 1,586 yards and just five touchdowns in 35 games and totaled 100 or more yards receiving in just two of those contests. After allowing a team-record 61 sacks in 16 games in '98 (3 or more sacks in 13 of those contests), the Redskins have allowed 10 sacks in eight games in '99, three or more sacks in just one of those eight contests. After scoring just 93 points in their first seven games (0-7), the Redskins have scored 485 points in their last 17 contests (11-6) dating back to '98. After scoring 21 points (3 offensive touchdowns) in the first quarter in Week 1 vs. the Cardinals, the Eagles have scored just 90 points in their last 35 quarters in '99 and have scored just 6 offensive touchdowns in their last 35 quarters. They have been limited to 17 or fewer points in three straight games and 22 of their 25 contests dating back to '98. The Eagles have scored just 275 points in their last 25 games dating back to '98. They have allowed 154 sacks in their last 41 games (1997-99). Philadelphia has allowed three or more sacks in three straight games. The Eagles have allowed 120 or more yards rushing in 19 of their last 25 contests dating back to '98. They have committed two or more turnovers in four straight games. Things to look for: Washington's horrific defense continues to be a major liability, and while QB Brad Johnson and friends came light up the scoreboard with the best of them, they could find themselves scrambling for a playoff spot if the don't get some help from the other side of the ball. On the other hand, the Eagles' defense has been quite respectable and now rookie QB Donovan McNabb takes his turn. Etc.: The Redskins are just 16-35-1 vs. divisional competition since 1993 (2-1 in '99), 5-9 vs. the Cowboys and just 11-26-1 vs. the rest of the NFC East. The Eagles have lost three straight games. Including playoffs, the Eagles are 14-34-1 in their last 49 games after opening 7-2 in '96. Redskins WR Irving Fryar (795) needs five catches to become just the 7th player in NFL history with 800 career receptions. Fryar (12,084) needs 62 yards to tie Charlie Joiner (12,146) for 7th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list. Eagles PK Norm Johnson (1,698) needs 1 point to tie Jan Stenerud (1,699) for 5th place on the NFL's all-time scoring list. Johnson has converted an NFL-record 287 consecutive PATs |
