Baxter Bits: Bills at Jets

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Bills head south to the Meadowlands in position to sweep this always-interesting AFC East rivalry for the fourth time in five seasons.

Back in Week 2 on a Sunday night at Orchard Park (ESPN), Bills RB Antowain Smith ran for 113 yards and a touchdown and QB Doug Flutie added 67 yards on the ground and a score as Buffalo ran up 224 yards rushing in a 17-3 win.

Including playoffs, Buffalo still owns a 45-33 edge in this original AFL series, prevailing in 19 of the last 24 meetings between the clubs dating back to the teams' second clash in 1987 -- this after the Jets had reeled off seven consecutive wins in this series dating back to 1984.

As for the Bills' last road tilt in this series (Week 10 of '98), Jets QB Vinny Testaverde threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns (1 INT) and the New York defense limited the Buffalo attack to four field goals as Bill Parcells' club outgained their guests in total yardage, 398-182, and snapped a six-game losing streak to the Bills thanks to an impressive 34-12 victory.

Despite last year's loss, the Bills are 10-2 in their last 12 road tilts in this series dating back to 1987 (12-2 at Giants Stadium since '87 if you include wins over the Giants in 1990 and '96).

Numbers: The Bills have committed seven turnovers and allowed eight sacks in seven wins while committing nine turnovers and allowing 10 sacks in three losses in '99. The Bills have allowed 72 points in seven wins, 77 points in three losses in '99. They have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing and 17 or fewer points in three straight games. WR Eric Moulds has scored at least one touchdown in his last five games.

Jets RB Curtis Martin has carried 118 times for 531 yards (4.5 avg.) and one touchdown in his last four games, rushing for 120 or more yards in each of those contests, this after totaling 97 carries for 364 yards (3.8 avg.) and two touchdowns in his first five games in '99. Including playoffs, during the Bill Parcells Era with the Jets (1997-99), QB Vinny Testaverde has thrown 31 touchdown passes and just 11 interceptions while being sacked only 21 times in 17 games with the team. However, five other Jets quarterbacks (since-departed Neil O'Donnell and Glenn Foley, as well as Ray Lucas, Tom Tupa and Rick Mirer) have combined to throw 30 TD passes and 21 interceptions while being sacked 74 times. The Jets have allowed 26 sacks in nine games in '99, this after allowing just 25 sacks in 16 games in '98. Including playoffs, the Jets have allowed just 213 points in 16 wins (17 or fewer points in 13 of those contests) while giving up 267 points in 11 losses in their last 26 games dating back to '98. They have committed just 20 turnovers in 16 wins, 28 turnovers in 11 losses dating back to '98, including playoffs.

Things to look for: After a mini two-game slide, the Bills have elevated their performance on both sides of the ball and look ready to make a serious run at the AFC East title. But they'll have to deal with a scrappy Jets' squad that proved last Monday night that they still have enough pride to play spoiler, at the very least. New York's defense must be prepared for Buffalo's patient ground attack.

Etc.: Including a victory in Super Bowl XXV, Bill Parcells is 7-9 lifetime vs. the Bills (1-2 with Giants, including a replacement loss in '87, 4-4 with Patriots, 2-3 with Jets). The Bills have won three straight games. They are 66-30 (including 3-1 in playoffs) vs. AFC East competition since 1988, however they are just 24-21 vs. divisional foes since 1994 (including playoffs). WR Andre Reed (12,946) needs 54 yards to become just the 5th player in NFL history with 13,000 receiving yards. Reed (86) needs two touchdown catches to tie Don Maynard (88) for 5th place on the NFL's all-time touchdown receptions list. Reed (87) needs one touchdown to tie Don Maynard (88) for 19th place on the NFL's all-time touchdowns scored list.

Bills PK Steve Christie (240) needs 1 field goal to tie Chris Bahr (241) for 19th place on the NFL's all-time field goals list. The Jets are just 10-22 in their last 32 games vs. divisional competition dating back to 1995, but are 8-4 vs. AFC East rivals dating back to '98.
