Baxter Bits: Panthers at Browns

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Panthers head north to Cleveland Browns Stadium as these clubs collide for the first time ever.

Numbers: The Panthers have committed 95 turnovers in their last 41 games (14-27) dating back to '97, totaling 21 turnovers in 14 wins and 74 turnovers in 27 losses. They have amassed 35 takeaways in 14 wins, 34 takeaways in 27 losses dating back to '97. The Panthers have allowed 170 points in 14 wins, 761 points in 27 losses dating back to '97. In 40 regular-season games with Carolina (1996, 1998-99), Panthers' OLB Kevin Greene has totaled 35.0 sacks (14.5 in '96, 15.0 in '98, 5.5 in '99).

The Browns' offense has scored 12 touchdowns in 10 games in '99, 6 by rookie WR Kevin Johnson. They have scored 99 points in 10 games in '99, 36 by Johnson. The Browns have been limited to fewer than 300 total yards in each of their first 10 games in '99. They have allowed 160 or more yards rushing in four straight games, and have allowed 200 or more yards rushing in 5-of-10 contests in '99. The Browns have forced seven turnovers in two wins but have totaled just seven takeaways in eight losses in '99. They have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in four straight games.

Things to look for: While the fans were probably disappointed about the Browns' shoddy effort against the Ravens two weeks ago, the players and coaching staff were ecstatic following their stunning upset of the Steelers in Pittsburgh, which was not only a win over their biggest rival but a gauge of how far the team has come since Week 1. George Seifert's Panthers may be running into a buzzsaw.

Etc.: The Panthers are 10-8 lifetime vs. AFC teams (1-1 in '99) dating back to 1995. They are 14-27 in their last 41 games (1997-99) after finishing 12-4 and winning the NFC West title in 1996.
