Baxter Bits: Lions at Packers

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Lions head to Lambeau Field in position to sweep this longtime NFC Central rivalry for the first time since 1991 in this renewal of one of the NFL's longtime rivalries as these traditional combatants square off for the 141st time (including playoffs) and the 16th time since 1993.

Back in Week 2 at the Silverdome, Lions QB Charlie Batch completed just 9-of-16 passes (2 INTs) but for 219 yards and a pair of long touchdowns (45 yards to WR Johnnie Morton, 74 yards to TE David Sloan), plus ran for another score as Bobby Ross' club jumped out to a 14-3 second-quarter lead and held on for a 23-15 triumph.

Packers still own the overall edge in the series standings (72-61-7) and have dominated as of late, prevailing in 11 of the last 17 meetings (including NFC First Round playoff wins in 1993 and '94) dating back to 1992.

As for the Lions' last visit to Lambeau Field (Week 1 of '98), Packers QB Brett Favre threw for 277 yards and a pair of scores and the Green Bay defense (32-yard fumble return by SS LeRoy Butler) and special teams (100-yard kickoff return by since-departed WR Roell Preston) found their way to the end zone as well as the Pack outlasted the Lions, 38-19.

Including playoffs, the Lions have dropped five straight at Lambeau Field dating back to the 1994 NFC Wild Card Game, and eight straight road tilts in this series (0-3 at Milwaukee from 1992-94) dating back to 1992.

Numbers: Including playoffs, the Lions have allowed 283 points in 20 victories (17 or fewer points in 14 of those wins) and 592 points in 22 losses dating back to '97. They have forced 46 turnovers in 20 wins, 21 takeaways in 22 losses, including playoffs, dating back to '97. The Lions have totaled three or more sacks in five straight games. They have allowed three or more sacks in three straight games and 8-of-9 contests in '99.

Since 1995 (83 games, including playoffs), Packers QB Brett Favre is 59-24, throwing for 145 touchdowns and just 46 interceptions in his 59 wins compared to 31 scores and 42 interceptions in 24 losses. Favre has thrown for 21,088 yards in those 83 games. The Packers have scored 108 points in four wins, 58 points in 5 losses in '99. They have forced 13 turnovers in four wins, but have totaled just 11 takeaways in five losses in '99. The Packers have committed seven turnovers in four wins, 16 turnovers in five losses in '99. They have forced two or more turnovers in four straight games. The Packers have allowed three or more sacks in three straight games. The Packers have been limited to 13 or fewer points in three straight games.

Things to look for: There's been nothing but second-guessing galore going on in the Motor City following Bobby Ross' controversial two-point conversion decision at Arizona, but the bigger story is how will the feisty coach prepare his team for a meeting with the frustrated Packers, who have certainly lost their confidence and swagger but are still very much in the NFC Central race, unless they stumble here.

Etc.: The Packers have lost three straight games for the first time since 1994. Since 1997 (including playoffs), the Lions are 20-22 under head coach Bobby Ross, including 13-7 vs. NFC Central rivals. Since 1992 (including playoffs), the Packers are 50-7 at Lambeau Field (including 5-0 in playoffs), but have lost 2 straight at Lambeau Field. Including playoffs, the Packers are 28-5 at home (24-4 at Lambeau Field, 4-1 at Milwaukee) vs. NFC Central rivals dating back to 1992. They are just 6-6 vs. divisional rivals dating back to 1998 (2-2 in '99), this after going a combined 15-2 (including playoffs) vs. NFC Central rivals in 1996 (7-1) and '97 (8-1).
