Baxter Bits: Colts at Eagles

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Colts make their way to Philadelphia for the first time since 1990 as these interconference rivals meet for the fourth time in the 1990s.

The Colts own a one-game advantage in the series standings (7-6) and posted a 37-10 Thursday night triumph (ESPN) in 1996 at the RCA Dome in the most recent encounter between the clubs.

The Colts are 3-4 lifetime at Philadelphia, including 2-3 at Veterans Stadium, their last road tilt in this series resulting in a 24-23 victory in 1990.

Numbers: In his last 5 games, Colts RB Edgerrin James has rushed for 493 yards and 3 touchdowns (running for 100 or more yards in 3 straight games and 4 of those 5 contests), plus caught 24 passes for 307 yards and 1 touchdown. James has rushed for 100 or more yards in 6-of-9 contests in '99. After throwing just three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his first four games, Colts QB Peyton Manning has thrown 40 TD passes and 27 interceptions in his last 21 contests dating back to '98, throwing two or more touchdown passes in 13 of his last 20 games. However, Manning has thrown two or more interceptions in eight of his last 18 contests. Manning has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 22 straight games dating back to '98. After allowing an AFC-high 62 sacks in 16 games in 1997, the Colts have allowed just 29 sacks in their last 25 games dating back to '98. After allowing 11 sacks in their first four games in 1998, the Colts have allowed just 18 sacks in their last 21 contests, giving up zero sacks in 12 of those 21 contests. They have allowed 116 points in seven wins, 65 points in two losses in '99.

The Eagles have forced 25 turnovers in 10 games in '99, this after totaling an NFL-low 17 takeaways in 16 games in '98. They have totaled 17 interceptions in 10 games in '99, this after totaling just nine interceptions in 16 games in '98. The Eagles have forced two or more turnovers in 7-of-10 contests in '99. After scoring 21 points (3 offensive touchdowns) in the first quarter in Week 1 vs. the Cardinals, the Eagles have scored just 125 points in their last 39 quarters in '99 and have scored just 8 offensive touchdowns in their last 39 quarters. They have allowed 120 or more yards rushing in 20 of their last 26 contests dating back to '98...Eagles have allowed 157 sacks in their last 42 games (1997-99). The Eagles have allowed three or more sacks in four straight games..

Things to look for: After learning some early lessons this season, the Colts continue to mature and have now proven they are comfortable playing anyone and anywhere. Indianapolis' defense still has some work to do and will have its hands full with Eagles' RB Duce Staley, who could be headed to the Pro Bowl. But rookie QB Donovan McNabb will spend the day running away from Colts' DE Chad Bratzke.

Etc.: The Colts are 7-2 for the first time since 1977, when they opened 9-1 and finished 10-4 and won the AFC East under since-departed head coach Ted Marchibroda (his first stint with the team). They have won five straight games in the same season for the first time since winning their final five games in 1992. The Colts are 7-2 in 1999, this after finishing a combined 6-26 in 1997-98. They have won three straight road games. They are just 10-20 vs. NFC teams dating back to 1991, but 2-0 in '99.

Eagles PK Norm Johnson has converted an NFL-record 288 consecutive PATs.
