The Steelers head south to Adelphia Coliseum looking to end their losing ways in this hard-hitting divisional rivalry. While Pittsburgh has nearly doubled (38-22) the Titans' win total in this storied series (including 3-0 in playoffs), and have taken eight of the last 14 meetings dating back to head coach Bill Cowher's arrival in the Steel City in '92, Tennessee swept this storied AFC Central rivalry a year ago for the first time since 1993. In Week 9 at Three Rivers Stadium, Titans RB Eddie George ran 34 times for 153 yards and a score, QB Steve McNair threw three touchdown passes and the Tennessee defense picked off Steelers QB Kordell Stewart three times (including a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown by since-departed LB Lonnie Marts) as Jeff Fisher's team built a 41-15 lead enroute to a 41-31 victory. Two weeks later at Vanderbilt Stadium (Week 11), Titans PK Al Del Greco kicked three field goals, including a 22-yard boot with :03 to play which proved to be the difference, and the Tennessee special teams added a late touchdown when the Steelers fumbled a series of laterals on the ensuing kickoff and TE Michael Roan recovered the ball in the end zone as Jeff Fisher's club completed the sweep, 23-14. The Steelers have lost three straight and are just 3-6 in their last nine road games in this rivalry dating back to 1990.
Numbers: RB Eddie George has carried 59 times for 232 yards (3.9 avg.) and one touchdown in his last two outings vs. Pittsburgh (1998), this after carrying just 64 times for only 166 yards (2.6 avg.) and one touchdown in his first four games vs. the Steelers (1996-97). The Steelers' defense has allowed just nine offensive touchdowns in their first nine games in '99, while their offense (1) and special teams (1) have allowed two touchdowns and given up three safeties. Since 1996 (including playoffs), the Steelers are 27-5 when limiting the opposition to 17 or fewer points, 8-21 when giving up more than 17 points. Including playoffs, the Steelers have rushed for 130 or more yards in 26 of their last 43 games dating back to '97. They have totaled 32 takeaways in 12 wins while forcing just 16 turnovers in 13 losses dating back to '98. After not committing a turnover in their first two games (2-0), the Steelers have committed 11 turnovers in their last seven games (3-4) in '99. The Steelers have limited the opposition to 16 or fewer points in four straight games. They have allowed 38 points in five wins, 86 points in four losses in '99. After giving up just five touchdown passes in their first seven games, the Titans have allowed 33 TD passes in their last 18 contests dating back to '98. They have totaled four or more sacks in three straight games.
Things to look for: Pittsburgh's bad habit of playing not to lose this season cost them dearly against the Browns, and if Bill Cowher's team has any aspirations of getting to the playoffs this year a win here is now essential. But Tennesse's defense figures to spend a lot of time near the line of scrimmage and around Steelers' QB Kordell Stewart, who'll be knocked flat if he can't find his receivers downfield.. Etc.: After opening 7-4 in '98, the Steelers are just 5-9 in their last 14 contests. They are 37-19 vs. AFC Central teams under head coach Bill Cowher (including 1-0 in playoffs). The Titans are 23-20 in their last 43 divisional games (1994-99), this after going 6-0 vs. AFC Central foes in '93. However, they are 12-1 in their last 13 games vs. divisional competition dating back to '98 (5-0 in '99) and have won 11 straight games vs. AFC Central rivals. The Titans have won four straight home games. PK Al Del Greco (1,414) needs 8 points to tie Matt Bahr (1,422) for 10th place on the NFL's all-time scoring list |
