Whispers from around the NFL

Pro Football Weekly

Here are the latest NFL rumors from the folks at Pro Football Weekly:

Lawyer Milloy
Lawyer Milloy appears to be on the verge of a long-term deal to stay in New England.

  • Negotiations on a contract extension for Patriots strong safety Lawyer Milloy are on hold, but all indications are the deal will still get done. Milloy told his agent to postpone talks if the deal was not finalized during the team's bye week. It now appears the sides will resume discussions after the season. The deal could be worth in the neighborhood of $35 million over seven years.

  • Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown spoke out in favor of cornerback Charles Woodson playing on offense, but quarterback Rich Gannon expressed reservations. Nevertheless, Woodson caught a 19-yard pass in a Week 10 victory over San Diego.

  • Chargers GM Bobby Beathard said last week that he is not planning to retire any time soon, and he wants to honor the two remaining years on his contract.

  • The Bengals might consider re-signing punter Brad Costello this week. Costello was the team's punter at the end of last season and had apparently won the job again in training camp before he suffered a torn thigh muscle. The Bengals have not been happy with the slow delivery of incumbent punter Will Brice.

  • Browns president Carmen Policy is taking some heat over the sterile environment at the team's new stadium. Apparently, the team doesn't allow any signs or banners inside the stadium, which upset many fans who had planned on sending messages to Ravens owner Art Modell during the Week 9 game against Baltimore. Also, some people complain that security personnel are too diligent in the famed Dawg Pound. Policy has gotten the message and says he will review stadium guidelines after the season.

  • Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, who suffered concussions in Weeks 8 and 9, has said he has no intention of retiring in the near future.

  • We hear that personnel experts believe Buccaneers strong safety John Lynch is on the verge of becoming an elite safety.

  • The Bears have taken kickoff duties away from punter Todd Sauerbrun because he kicks too many line drives. Kicker Chris Boniol, who doesn't have great leg strength but gets better hang time, is now in charge.

  • Packers defensive tackle Gilbert Brown clearly isn't the player he used to be. While Brown has held the point of attack, he's not even a factor if the run isn't directly at him. Furthermore, Brown doesn't collapse the pocket on pass plays and appears to have lost some of his desire.

  • Lions linebacker Allen Aldridge is having a much bigger impact playing on the strong side this season than he did on the weak side last season.

  • Vikings coach Dennis Green said that a big reason wide receiver Jake Reed has dropped so many passes in recent weeks is because he has played hurt. Not many are buying it, though, because Reed previously said that he's as healthy as he's ever been.

  • Titans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said that if tape of backup quarterback Neil O'Donnell's work with the scout team last Wednesday gets around, he'll find himself a starting job next year.

  • Eyebrows were raised in San Francisco a few weeks ago when the 49ers were seen experimenting with a shotgun formation in a bye-week practice, but coach Steve Mariucci has since ditched the idea of making it part of the team's game plan, calling it an "offseason project."

  • The Panthers are disappointed that running back Tshimanga Biakabutuka has not been able to return from his sprained ankle. He was hurt in the Panthers' loss to Detroit in Week 7, and when he returns, he will have to prove himself all over again in a rotation system.

  • Steelers center Dermontti Dawson has admitted he has grown increasingly frustrated with his injured hamstring. He has been active in practice lately, but says he has trouble getting used to the fact he doesn't heal as quickly as he did when he was younger.
