Black eye Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin sustained a serious neck injury after getting tackled and hitting his helmet against the turf. As paramedics ran onto the field with a stretcher, fans cheered, even as Irvin was strapped down and taken by ambulance to a local hospital. A headline in a Philly newspaper the next day read: "Unspeakable ... even for us." Irvin would find out later that he'd been temporarily paralyzed and when doctors examined him, they found he'd been born with a condition called cervical stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column. Another blow could have resulted in permanent injury and Irvin retired prior to training camp. |
