Police not interested in Cam Newton

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department spokesman Rob Tufano says Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is not a person of interest following a weekend shooting at a Charlotte nightclub.

According to the police report, two people sustained non-life-threatening injuries Saturday night after gunshots were fired at Label nightclub.

WSOC-TV in Charlotte published photos and video Tuesday night that showed Newton on stage with Young Jeezy -- one of the rappers scheduled to perform at the party -- before gunshots sent people ducking to the ground and fleeing for the exits. According to the station, shots were heard moments after the pictures were taken.

The CIAA basketball tournament was in Charlotte last week, but the conference released a statement Sunday saying the party wasn't a sanctioned event.

The Panthers declined comment on the incident.

Police say no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Information from ESPN.com Panthers reporter David Newton and The Associated Press was used in this report.
