McCown suffered shoulder and rib injuries after taking several hits from the St. Louis Rams defense last week. McCown was limited in practice Thursday but said Friday that he "felt better" after throwing.
Browns coach Mike Pettine said Friday that McCown is still day-to-day.
"We'll see where he is tomorrow," Pettine said.
Johnny Manziel, who is being investigated by the NFL after a dispute with his girlfriend prompted a police response in the Cleveland area, will remain the backup quarterback. Pettine said the Browns are prepared to play either quarterback.
McCown is having one of his best seasons of his 13-year career, throwing for 1,686 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions through six games with a 96.1 passer rating.
ESPN's Adam Caplan reported during the week that McCown was expected to start Week 8.
