The New Orleans Saints will honor former Pro Bowl defensive end Will Smith by wearing a No. 91 decal on their helmets throughout the 2016 season, the team announced before Saturday's preseason game at the Houston Texans.
Smith, who spent 10 years in New Orleans, was shot and killed after a traffic incident in New Orleans in April. He was 34.
A former first-round draft pick and longtime captain for the Saints, he ranks fourth in team history with 67½ sacks, including a career-high 13 in 2009, when they won the Super Bowl.
Smith also left a lasting impression on multiple eras of coaches and teammates, which was evident when dozens of them gathered in New Orleans for his memorial service and funeral in April.
