Nelson's return will boost Packers' offense (1:00)

ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky explains why Jordy Nelson's return will benefit Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay's offense. (1:00)

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Jordy Nelson won't have any restrictions when the Green Bay Packers open the regular season Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

That's what Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday, even though Nelson did not play a single snap in the preseason and hasn't lined up for a game since he tore the ACL in his right knee 12½ months ago.

"Jordy's full go," McCarthy said. "And we expect him to line up and be full-bore in Jacksonville."

Nelson opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list, but not because of his right knee. He said he sustained what he called "a hiccup" with his left knee while working out before camp. Although he declined to provide specifics, it kept Nelson off the field until mid-August.

He did not play, but Nelson participated in full-pad warm-ups on the field before the final three preseason games. His first full practice where he lined up in 11-on-11 drills was only one week ago.

The Packers kept seven receivers on their roster in part because of injuries, but not necessarily because of Nelson's situation. Jeff Janis has a broken right hand and Trevor Davis sustained a shoulder injury in the preseason finale at Kansas City.

"We'll probably be working five receivers this week," McCarthy said.

According to McCarthy, Nelson will be one of them.

McCarthy could be trying to present Nelson as a full participant -- even if he plans to limit his snaps -- to throw off the Jaguars. If not, it means the Packers feel good not only about Nelson's knee issues but also about his conditioning, which Nelson has said could be an issue, especially in the Florida heat.
