Steelers plan concussion program

The Pittsburgh Steelers, in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sports Medicine Concussion Program, will announce a public service campaign to promote concussion awareness and education later this week.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and Dr. Micky Collins, clinical and executive director of the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program, will hold a news conference Wednesday to introduce the program, which will provide information on preventing concussion through safe play and proper tackling techniques as well as concussion management.

With the recent spotlight on head injuries in the NFL and the increased levying of fines for improper hits, the Steelers' participation in a public campaign to promote proper play marks the first time an individual NFL team has launched a formal program related to concussion education.
