Michael Brockers injures ankle

Rams first-round pick Michael Brockers could miss the first month of the season with a high-ankle sprain, according to a report by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

A defensive tackle, Brockers suffered the injury in the first quarter of Thursday's preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens after getting cut on a block. The newspaper reported Brockers, the 14th pick in April's draft, had his ankle in a cast almost up to his knee Friday.

The Rams on Friday also released defensive lineman Vernon Gholston just over a week after signing the former first-round draft pick, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Gholston did not play in the NFL last season after three disappointing years with the New York Jets. Gholston joined the Rams on Aug. 22 and recorded one tackle in Thursday's preseason finale against the Ravens.

The Jets selected Gholston with the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft. But the former Ohio State star failed to record a sack in 45 games with New York.
