JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jaguars have released defensive tackle Kyle Love, whom they claimed off waivers from the New England Patriots on May 17.
The Patriots had released Love with a non-football injury/illness designation just weeks after he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
The 6-foot-1, 315-pound Love had survived the final cuts and made the 53-man roster on Saturday but was cut on Sunday when the Jaguars were awarded seven players off waivers. His release leaves the Jaguars with just four defensive tackles on the roster.
"It was a difficult decision," Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said of releasing Love. "That really came down to a numbers game for us. We feel like we have up to six players who can play inside for us on any given down. We were able to find players [on waivers] that could help us on special teams and help us and we weren't sure if we could activate all seven interior defensive linemen."
Had Love remained with the Jaguars, he was to be paid a base salary of $750,000 and would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency after the season.
Love's agent, Richard Kopelman of KLASS Sports, told ESPNBoston.com in May that he and Love had consulted doctors and was told that Love would be able to manage the disease and still be able to continue his career.
The 26-year-old Love signed with New England as an undrafted rookie out of Mississippi State in 2010. He played in 41 games (26 starts) and recorded 65 tackles and 5½ sacks in three seasons with the Patriots.
