Robert Meachem rejoins Saints

Robert Meachem is heading back to the New Orleans Saints.

The wide receiver signed a one-year deal with the Saints on Tuesday, the team announced. He is expected to be with the team in Week 1 against the visiting Atlanta Falcons.

Meachem was cut by San Diego on Saturday. He left the Saints, who drafted him in the first round in 2007, in 2012 to join the Chargers, signing a four-year, $14 million deal with San Diego.

He was brought in to be the No. 1 receiver for the post-Vincent Jackson Chargers. Signing Meachem, however, goes down as one of the worst decisions of the A.J. Smith era in San Diego.

Meachem did not make an impact in San Diego. He had 14 catches last year and did not improve his chemistry with quarterback Philip Rivers this summer. The Chargers cut Meachem despite being thin at receiver and owing him a guaranteed $5 million.

However, the Chargers get a bit of a break by Meachem heading back to the Saints. San Diego can save up to $715,0000 of the $5 million if Meachem stays with New Orleans all season.

It's believed the Saints still think Meachem has value as a field-stretcher. He also already has chemistry with quarterback Drew Brees. Meachem had 141 catches for 2,269 yards and 23 touchdowns in his four seasons with the Saints.
