Isaac Redman to remain starting RB

PITTSBURGH -- Isaac Redman said that, despite coming off his worst game as a professional, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin still had confidence in him.

The veteran running back apparently was right.

Redman will start at running back Monday night against the Cincinnati Bengals despite fumbling twice and rushing for just nine yards on eight carries in Pittsburgh's 16-9 season-opening loss to the Tennessee Titans.

"Obviously he played a bad game," Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. "He'll be given an opportunity to redeem himself."

The Steelers managed just 195 yards of total offense against the Titans -- only 32 on the ground.

Pittsburgh re-signed running back Jonathan Dwyer on Monday after placing LaRod Stephens-Howling on injured reserve. Dwyer led the Steelers in rushing last season with 623 yards, but Tomlin did not indicate how much of a role he will play in the running game against the Bengals.

"That depends on his dependability," Tomlin said. "We'll play it by ear and see how he looks on the practice field and in the classroom."

Tomlin's decision to anoint Redman as the Week 2 starter indicates that rookie Le'Veon Bell is at least a week away from returning as he recovers from a mid-foot sprain.

In other news, Tomlin said Kelvin Beachum will start at center until the team gets a better read on Fernando Velasco and Cody Wallace.

The Steelers signed Velasco, who started 13 games at center last season for the Titans, on Monday after placing Pro Bowler Maurkice Pouncey on injured reserve.

Pittsburgh also signed veteran kicker Shayne Graham as injury insurance with Shaun Suisham working through a minor hamstring injury. Tomlin has not ruled out Suisham playing against the Bengals.

The Steelers did not sign a linebacker after also placing Larry Foote on injured reserve. Kion Wilson will replace Foote as the team's starting strongside inside linebacker, Tomlin said.

Foote had surgery to repair a torn biceps Tuesday morning. Stephens-Howling is scheduled to have knee surgery Wednesday, Tomlin said, and Pouncey's knee surgery is set for Thursday.
