KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs planned to hold star running back Jamaal Charles out of practice Wednesday afternoon.
But Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the move was precautionary and that Charles had a good chance of playing Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys at Arrowhead Stadium.
"He did the walkthrough this morning," Reid said. "He might do a little bit this afternoon. We're just taking it slow. I think he'll be OK for the game. We'll see how it all works out."
Charles, while speaking on a conference call with Dallas-area reporters, also indicated he would be ready to play Sunday against the Cowboys.
"I'm feeling good," said Charles, who is from Port Arthur, Texas and played in college at Texas. "My mind is in a good place. My head -- I'm focused on Sunday, just trying to get better (during) the week.
"I don't want to miss this game for the world because everybody from Texas will be watching this game. I think I need to go out there and just show everybody what kind of Texas player I am."
Charles suffered a bruised thigh in last week's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The injury occurred when Charles was stepped on during the third quarter of Kansas City's 28-2 victory.
If Charles can't play against the Cowboys, the Chiefs would use either Cyrus Gray or rookie Knile Davis as his replacement. Gray played on passing downs against Jacksonville, while Davis was used more on running plays.
Prior to the injury, Charles rushed 16 times for 77 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 23 yards.
The Chiefs weren't as effective running the ball after Charles left the game. Gray and Davis combined to carry six times for 20 yards.
