Eagles, Falcons bad beats benefit betting public

Last-second defensive plays by the Eagles and Falcons benefited the betting public for a change and had bookmakers saying, "Oh, no" on another wild NFL Sunday.

Kyle Shanahan elected to attempt a field goal from the Falcons' 25-yard line on 4th-and-1 when up two points with 1:52 left. According to ESPN's win probability model, that decision cost the 49ers 1.8 percentage points in win probability. San Francisco would have needed a 59% chance of converting to justify going for it and the league average conversion rate in that situation is 65%.

Falcons defensive end Takk McKinley ruled out for the rest of Sunday's game after he appeared to re-aggravate a left shoulder injury in the first half. Fellow defensive end Vic Beasley got banged up in the first half but remains in the game. Beasley and Adrian Clayborn will have to do the bulk of the work rushing off the edge, while Jacob Tuioti-Mariner also is seeing time at defensive end.

Falcons showing they can contend with one of the NFC's best while tied with 49ers 10-10 at halftime. Sure, 49ers are a little banged up, but that shouldn't take away from Falcons' effort on both sides. Falcons doing more of what they should have been doing all season long: targeting Julio Jones. Star receiver, playing without sidekick Calvin Ridley (IR/ab injury), has five catches for 56 yards and a TD on nine targets. Jones broke his longest single-season scoring drought of nine games.

Asked Matt Ryan about his relationship with Kyle Shanahan: “ Kyle and I got along great. We are like personalities in that we're both opinionated. We both have thoughts on what you want to do. But at the end of the day, there was a great mutual respect for the both of us. And I thought we worked really, really well together. He's doing a great job in San Francisco.” Ryan will face his former offensive coordinator Sunday when the 4-9 Falcons travel to San Francisco to play Shanahan's 11-2 49ers.

WR Ridley out for season with abdominal injury

Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley posted a message on Instagram that said he is out for the season after suffering an abdominal injury during Sunday's 40-20 win over the Panthers.
