Meyer excited for 'slash' Etienne, sought Toney

Urban Meyer and the Jacksonville Jaguars are pleased with the new coach's first draft, but he did admit that he was disappointed to see former Florida receiver Kadarius Toney land with the Giants and not his team on the first night.

The Giants did not address offensive line in the draft. GM Dave Gettleman: "It's really apparent that we have a little more confidence in our offensive linemen players than you guys do." They weren't going to take a player just to take a player. Value had to marry with need.

The Giants 2021 draft class: Rd 1 (12): WR Kadarius Toney Rd 2 (50): OLB Azeez Ojulari Rd 3 (71): CB Aaron Robinson Rd 4 (116): OLB Elerson Smith Rd 6 (196): RB Gary Brightwell Rd 6 (201): CB Rodarius Williams

The Giants have been looking for offensive line help. Expect that to continue on Day 3. Dave Gettleman admitted they had two targets who were taken before they picked Friday. One I believe was Landon Dickerson (went to Eagles). After that, value just didn't meet need.

'Trader Dave': Giants GM bucks trend with deals

Dave Gettleman traded down before each of the Giants' first two picks in the NFL draft, bucking his trend of not moving back in the draft and earning him the nickname "Trader Dave."

Scouts, execs and draft analysts to me on Giants second-round pick Azeez Ojulari: "Great talent. Will keep getting better." "Fits what they do." "Checks a lot of boxes for you." "Middle to end of first [round talent]." "Really talented." "Pretty impressive." "Hard to find 34" arms."

Given no discount for future year picks and assuming next year's picks are 16th in their round -- the Giants added the equivalent of a first-round pick's worth of value in its deal with the Bears. The picks the Giants received were worth almost double what it gave up.

The first trade down in Dave Gettleman's GM career. Giants get pick 20 from Bears, a No. 1 and fourth-round pick next year, and a fifth this year.
