NYG's Baker charged; Seattle's Dunbar won't be

Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker is being prosecuted on four counts of robbery, but Seahawks corner Quinton Dunbar will not be charged in the incident dating back to May.

Quinton Dunbar and the Seahawks caught a massive break with word from the Broward County state attorney that Dunbar will not be charged in his alleged armed-robbery case. Now the question is whether Dunbar, who's on the Commissioner Exempt List, will face a suspension. The NFL suspended Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed six games last year over a 2017 incident in which he was neither arrested nor charged due to insufficient evidence, the same reason prosecutors declined to charge Dunbar.

DK Metcalf had one of the most productive seasons by a rookie wide receiver in Seahawks history. He told reporters in a video conference Thursday that one thing he wants to improve in Year 2 is cleaning up drops. ESPN's database has him with four drops and a 58.6% catch rate (58 catches on 99 targets) that ranked 57th among qualifying wide receivers.

The Seahawks have claimed defensive back D.J. Reed off waivers from the 49ers. He suffered a torn pectoral earlier this summer and isn't expected to be ready for a while. Reed's measurements (5-9, 190 pounds, 31.5-inch arms) suggests he projects as more of a nickelback than an outside cornerback in Pete Carroll's defense. He was a fifth-round pick in 2018 and has played in 31 games over two seasons.

In addition to placing running back Rashaad Penny (knee) on the Physically Unable to Perform list, the Seahawks put three rookies on the Non-Football Injury list: defensive end Darrell Taylor (second round), tight end Colby Parkinson (fourth) and defensive end Marcus Webb (UDFA). Parkinson broke a bone in his foot earlier in the offseason. Taylor played through a stress fracture in his leg last year. The team waived defensive tackle Josh Avery (UDFA) with a non-football-injury designation.

Pete Carroll said tight end Will Dissly passed his physical upon reporting for training camp. The Seahawks will ease Dissly back in as he continues his recovery from a torn Achilles in October, Carroll said, but passing his physical is a good sign for his availability early this season. Carroll raved about the job Dissly did in rehabbing his second major injury in as many NFL seasons. "We're thrilled about Will's process," Carroll said.

The Seahawks placed running back Rashaad Penny on the Physically Unable to Perform list, as expected. Pete Carroll said Penny isn't reporting to training camp until later this week. The team didn't want to rush him back to Seattle and unnecessarily disrupt his rehab from ACL surgery. Carroll said the reports on Penny's progress are "really strong," but the likelihood of him having to begin the season on PUP was a factor in Seattle signing Carlos Hyde as an early-down complement to Chris Carson.

Seahawks monitoring AB, open to Gordon return

Pete Carroll on Monday acknowledged the Seahawks have interest in Antonio Brown, although he noted the wide receiver's "complex" situation, and said the team is "very open" to a reunion with Josh Gordon.

The Seahawks have agreed to a deal to bring back defensive end Branden Jackson, a source tells ESPN. Expect it to be for less than the $2.133 million he was set to make on an RFA tender before he was released eight days ago. Jackson has to go through COVID testing before he can sign later this week. Seattle only had L.J. Collier and Rasheem Green as 5-techniques once they released Jackson, so bringing him back on a cheaper deal made sense all along. The NFL Network first reported the agreement.

How Russell Wilson's late father shaped his ambition (1:51)

Seahawks GM John Schneider told Peter King that the need to get faster on defense was a factor in the Jamal Adams trade. Seattle had one of its worst defensive seasons under Pete Carroll in 2019 -- its 6.02 yards per play was the worst mark of the Carroll era -- and a lack of speed was among the underlying reasons. Seattle also spent its first-round pick on speedy linebacker Jordyn Brooks.

Brady Henderson ESPN

How was Seahawks GM John Schneider comfortable giving up two first-round picks and then some for Jamal Adams? Part of his rationale, as he told Peter King, was that Seattle is usually picking in the late 20s and thus would have to give up a similar haul in order to move up to No. 6, where Adams was drafted. Based on the draft value chart, he's right. His point was that the Seahawks gave up what they would've had to give up in the draft for a talent like Adams.
