Saivion Smith's addition via waivers gives the Seahawks 10 true cornerbacks: D.J. Reed, Ahkello Witherspoon, Tre Brown, Tre Flowers, Damarious Randall, Pierre Desir, Jordan Miller, Gavin Heslop, Bryan Mills (UDFA) and Smith. Marquise Blair and Ugo Amadi are listed as safeties but are Seattle's top two nickelbacks.

The Seahawks have claimed cornerback Saivion Smith off waivers from Dallas and signed tight end Nick Guggemos. Smith is listed at 6-1/200. He was undrafted out of Alabama in 2019 and spent last season with the Cowboys after playing in the XFL. Per the Seahawks, Guggemos is 6-4/248 and played wide receiver at D-III University of St. Thomas, the alma mater of GM John Schneider. Seattle now has five tight ends: Will Dissly, Gerald Everett, Colby Parkinson, Tyler Mabry and Guggemos.

The NFL has announced the dates for every team's offseason workout program. The Seahawks' rookie minicamp is scheduled for May 14-6. OTAs are scheduled for May 24, May 26-27, June 1, June 3-4 and June 7-10. Mandatory minicamp is June 15-17. Everything other than mandatory minicamp is voluntary, and Seahawks veterans have already announced they will not take part in voluntary work. It's unclear how that will impact rookie minicamp as rookies were not part of the vote to skip voluntary work.

The Seahawks have claimed linebacker Nate Evans off waivers from the Jaguars, according to ESPN's Field Yates. Evans was undrafted last year out of UCF and didn't appear in a game with Jacksonville. He adds depth at a thin spot. The Seahawks recently added Jon Rhattigan (Army) as a UDFA and Aaron Donkor via the NFL's International Pathway Program. The linebackers they now have in the fold: Bobby Wagner, Jordyn Brooks, Cody Barton, Ben Burr-Kirven, Rhattigan, Donkor and Evans.

German linebacker Aaron Donkor was allocated to the Seahawks via the NFL's International Pathway Program. Per the team, Donkor played in the German Football League then at New Mexico Military Institute and most recently at Arkansas State in 2019. Linebacker is a thin spot for the Seahawks with only five in the fold other than Donkor: Bobby Wagner, Jordyn Brooks, Cody Barton, Ben Burr-Kirven and UDFA Jon Rhattigan.

The Seahawks' three picks this year are tied for the second-fewest any team has made since 1967. Only five other teams since then made three or fewer. The Seahawks averaged 9.5 picks and made no fewer than eight in 11 previous drafts under John Schneider and Pete Carroll. Schneider reiterated that they'll still have opportunities to add players with another phase of free agency about to begin: "We're going to be approaching this now like, OK, who's going to be letting people go after the draft?"

The Seahawks tried to trade up for OT Stone Forsythe well before doing so in the sixth round at No. 208 overall. John Schneider said he considered moving back a second time in Round 4 and trying to take CB Tre Brown a few picks later than he did with the goal of adding a pick that would help them move up for Forsythe. Schneider wondered if his quiet, laid-back and "all-business" demeanor was a reason he was available as late as he was. Forsythe said he had heard he could go as early as Round 3.

The Seahawks list OT Stone Forsythe, their sixth-round pick, at 6-9. "You wouldn't think a guy that tall would be as fast as he is," Pete Carroll said. Forsythe agreed with the evaluation that he's a better pass-protector than run-blocker and said he needs to improve in the latter after playing in a pass-centric Florida offense. Said Carroll: "The benefit that Stone has is he can learn from one of the best players in the league in Duane Brown ... Duane will take him under his wing, I know it."

The Seahawks departed from their norm last year when they put the 5-9 D.J. Reed on the outside, where they've always liked longer, taller corners. They're doing the same with fourth-round pick Tre Brown, who will play on the outside at 5-10. "We would love to have big corners and all that," John Schneider said. "... But you have to adjust to the times, too, and there is only a certain amount of players that you can pick from." Pete Carroll said Brown plays with an aggressiveness similar to Reed.

Seahawks talk to Sherman as DB mulls future

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed that he's been in communication with Richard Sherman, but said a reunion with the former All-Pro cornerback isn't currently in the works.

GM John Schneider thinks that having so few draft picks will make the Seahawks "very attractive" to undrafted free agents. UDFAs strongly weigh their chances of making a given roster when selecting offers. The fewer draft picks there are to compete against, the better those chances are. Schneider said the Seahawks' big draft classes in recent years made it hard to recruit UDFAs. That may be a reason why he traded back into the seventh round in 2019 and 2020 for John Ursua and Stephen Sullivan.

Brady Henderson ESPN

GM John Schneider said the Seahawks thought they were close to moving back from No. 56 until a trade fell through. By taking D'Wayne Eskridge there and not adding picks to their league-low total of three, they'll enter Day 3 with just their fourth- and seventh-rounders left. In a lighthearted moment, Schneider said they'll think about Gabe Jackson and Carlos Dunlap in between their picks at 129 and 250. Seattle traded a fifth for Jackson last month and a seventh for Dunlap last October.

Brady Henderson ESPN

D'Wayne Eskridge's versatility is important in new OC Shane Waldron's system. The plan is to go up-tempo regularly. That means less substituting for receivers. The more they stay on the field, the more they have to do. Pete Carroll used the Rams' Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp as examples from Waldron's past of receivers whose versatility keeps them on the field. For Eskridge, he said that means blocking, going in motion and playing different spots. "You're going to see that he can all of that."

Brady Henderson ESPN

Pete Carroll didn't use the term "gadget plays," but that's what he described when talking about the creative ways the Seahawks can use D'Wayne Eskridge. "We can hand him the football, we can flip it to him, we can do things with him behind the line of scrimmage," Carroll said. "He runs very effectively on reverses and stuff like that, and the [kickoff] returns show that as well." Carroll said Seattle was looking for a receiver with that type of versatility. They won't restrict him to the slot.
