Start of a new era
Former offensive tackle Art Shell had a Hall of Fame career with the Raiders. But when Al Davis hired him to replace Mike Shanahan in 1989, Shell became the first black head coach in the modern NFL era. Shell was 56-41 in 5½ seasons and led the Raiders to three postseason appearances, but has since failed to land another head coaching job.

Shell took the Raiders to the AFC title game in 1990.
