Crouch could need a year to adjust

MACOMB, Ill. -- Here are five observations from the Rams' training camp.

Eric Crouch
Eric Crouch is making the move to wide receiver in the NFL.
1. For the first time, Eric Crouch is starting to look like a wide receiver. He lined up on an inside slant play and made a nice catch. It will probably take him the entire season to adjust his body to his new position. He is just finding out the conditioning needed to be a wide receiver. The running is different than it was at the quarterback position, too. Though he might not be on the field much in the offense, Crouch is in Mike Martz' plans for next season.

2. Left tackle Orlando Pace dropped 10 pounds and almost looks like a big tight end at 310 pounds. Pace, one of the game's most dominating left tackles, felt he wanted a little more quickness, and the thinner body has given him more energy on the field. If that's possible.

3. Quarterback Kurt Warner calls Terrence Wilkins the perfect guy to replace Az-Zahir Hakim because he has the quickness and elusiveness to execute the plays that made Az exciting. The problem is adjusting his mind. Hakim had the mind of a quarterback in picking up the plays over the three-year evolution of this offense. Wilkins is in the tough spot of trying to catch up to a group that has three years of executing the plays he's trying to learn.

4. Former sack specialist Kevin Greene helped out the defensive ends in camp and predicts Leonard Little and Grant Winstrom will each have double-digit sack totals this season. Greene worked with both ends teaching them tricks. The Rams are also letting defensive tackle Brian Young play some end and he looks impressive. So does defensive tackle Ryan Pickett, who is 20 pounds lighter and much more explosive.

5. Lamar Gordon will surprise people in the Rams offense. Though he is the third back behind Marshall Faulk and Trung Canidate, the 214-pound Gordon looks great on sweeps and is a big, fast straight ahead runner. Having Gordon and Canidate will give Faulk a chance to get some rest during games.
