Wide receivers looking good

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Here are five observations from the Titans training camp:

1. This is the best receiving corps for the Titans since the Run-and-Shoot days in Houston. Derrick Mason has been to the Pro Bowl, and Kevin Dyson looks great coming off his second year away from knee surgery. The sleepers are in backups Justin McCareins and tall, former quarterback Drew Bennett. The 6-2 McCareins is one of the best looking unknown third receivers in the league. He weighs 218 pounds and he wasn't intimidated going against tight coverage by Dolphins cornerbacks. The 6-5 Bennett didn't back down against the Dolphins cornerbacks and made some great catches.

2. Eddie George's world-class stride is indeed back. The time he spent in the Bay Area working with Jerry Rice and his trainer brought back that elongated stride that made it tough for defenders to tackle him.

3. The big question remains the cornerback depth, and that is evident with Samari Rolle out until late in the exhibition season with a stress fracture in his ankle. Andre Dyson is the other starter. Dainon Sidney and Donald Mitchell are each coming of ACL tears. Both look good now, but if one suffers a bump in the road, the Titans might be looking for help from the outside. They believe fourth-round choice Mike Echols will help but he's a week away from practicing coming off a leg injury.

4. Don't worry about the backup running backs. Skip Hicks had his best offseason of training and is having a great camp. The Titans also made a steal by adding Robert Holcombe, who played fullback for the Rams but is being used at halfback by the Titans.

5. Replacing retired center Bruce Matthews is impossible. There is a lot of pressure on Gennaro DiNapoli, who has drawn praise for his work in camp. DiNapoli bruised his shoulder in Friday's practice, but the Titans have to use him more in the preseason to see how he matches up against quality defensive tackles.
